Moreover, none of the above-mentioned branches of a democratic form of national governance can function independently from each other (Ebony, 99-103). For example, in the United States, the congress, which is the legislative arm, has an impeachment body to check on the executive arm i.e. the president (can also be legislative due to the veto power). Furthermore, Separation of powers inevitably means split of responsibility, which leads to friction amongst the separated organs at the expense of cultivating cooperation for the mutual benefi t of all. The other possible danger of too much democracy is the possibility of making wrong choices. According to the principles of democracy, the common man has all the powers or rather rights to elect their government as well as their main authorities. However, too much of these powers can sometimes be dangerous based on various reasons. For instance, it is evident that not all the people are aware of the political conditions in their country (Kishore, 1-5). Additionally, majority of the common people are not familiar political issues affecting their society. Thus, there is a danger of making wrong choices during elections, which in turn bring into power individuals who are likely to misuse the rule of democracy. Without the right people in the government, development in all perspectives would be difficult. As such, certain measures should be put into place to ensure that the common people do not misuse their supreme democratic powers by making wrong choices. However, a number of arguments have been put forward against the idea of removing the government too far from the people, or rather having a political system with too little democracy. One of these arguments is that the constitution acts as a safeguard in shielding citizen’s rights in most of democratic countries. Based on this argument, changing the constitution requires agreement of majority of the representatives of the people whom they elected. It can also be done through the court, if the court believes that there is need for such changes for the benefit of the people collectively (Ebony, 120-123). The other way through which the constitution can be changed is through a referendum, where the everybody in the country is entitled to give opinions regarding the proposed changes. Additionally, separation of powers into the judicial branch, the legislative branch, and the executive branch, impose considerable challenges for a small majority to enforce their will. The second argument that has been highlighted by the proponents of too much democracy against limitation of democracy is that minorities and majorities can take distinctly different shape on diverse matters. It is evident that individuals would agree with the viewpoints of the majority on some issues, as well as with the minority on some other issues. Besides, the views of most people keep on changing depending on circumstances (Guiner, 34-37). As such, members of the majority may not advocate for the coercion of the minority, simply because they may form part of the minority in the future and the same thing night happen to them. Lastly, it is also argued that regardless of the risks of the tyranny of the majority, the rule of majority is the most preferred system as compared to other systems. Besides, tyranny of the majority is considered as being an upgrading of the tyranny of the minority (William and Theodore, 123-129). Arguably, most of the above mentioned problems of the tyrann y of the majority or rather too much democracy can also be witnessed in less democracies, adding to the problem of oppression of the majority by the minority. According to the advocates of democracy, studies indicate that more democracy reduces mass killing by the government as well as internal violence. In conclusion, there is no doubt that a democratic political system has its advantages. However, too much democracy can be dangerous, as once said by James Madison. Regardless of the arguments that have been put forward by the proponents of democracy against limitation or control of democracy, I believe that there is need to set limits of democracy in any given country. One of the arguments for limitation of democracy is that the tyranny of the majority may agree to oppression of the minority groups. The beginning of this class consists of two sections, Hinduism and Buddhism, both of which we have learned a lot about. Within these religions we see some differences and some similarities that one could relate the two with, and one of those is the term Dharma. When examining Dharma in both Hinduism and Buddhism, people may notice that they are somewhat similar, but they will also see that there even more differences within this term. To better understand this term, we must first define it within the religion and then see what they have in common with one another, if anything at all, and finally notice where the big differences are between them. Dharma is a powerful word, but some may see it differently then others depending on their religion, or their understanding of the religion at hand. So to better understand this term we must first define the term specific to each religion. First we look at Hinduism, here Dharma is defined as, â€Å"the most basic concept of Hinduism. It is a wide-ranging term for righteousness, law, duty, moral teachings, religion itself, or the order in the universe. †(Voorst, 72). It goes on to say that, â€Å"Dharma is also the god who embodies and promotes right order and living†(Voorst, 72). This in itself is not especially self-explanatory, but we will go into further detail after learning the meaning of the word in the Buddhist religion. The meaning for Dharma for Buddhists is quite different, â€Å"this world view the dharma, â€Å"law, teaching† about the universe and the release from it. †(Voorst, 119), so just looking at the definitions we can see that they can relate but we need to look further to see the differences. First we look at how these two religions use the term Dharma in the same way. We can start with the laws and teachings within the religions, and how they can go hand in hand with one another. The purpose is to guide the followers in a way of living, to provide for a better reincarnation. In Hinduism the teachings are passed down year after year for centuries in order for people to follow, so that at the end of life, they can come back as a better (or worse depending on the way in which they lived) living creature. Then in Buddhism it follows the same guidelines, to teach the ways in which to live the best life. Which brings us to the next commonality between the religions, which is the art of reincarnation. Both the Hindus and Buddhists follow a cycle of reincarnation (samsara), to follow the religious recommendations in hope that the next life they live is better then the one this time around, and ever moving forward toward one day finding their way out of rebirth called: moksha in Hindu terms and nirvana in Buddhist terms. After learning the basic ways of the religions and how they can go hand in hand, we have to look at what makes them a religion apart. While we can for sure see these religions can relate to one another, we need to look further to get the difference. The main difference is the way in which the teachings are learned and understood. In Hinduism the teachings come from being passed on over time, and having specific duties; as to where and who you are in life, â€Å"specific to one’s place in the world; one’s social position or caste membership, stage of life or gender†(Voorst, 72). This is showing that Dharma of a wife is very different from that of her husband or child, and a worrier’s dharma is very different of that of a laborer. To compare this to Buddhism it is very different, in this religion we have the teachings of Buddha himself, to believe that, â€Å" he taught his followers to think for themselves and carefully examine the teachings of the religion to determine what is right for them†(Voorst, 106). So we can see that in one religion we have life set out the way it should be lived and in the other people are free to live the way that they see fit within their religion. The next main difference is the actual being of the dharma. In Hinduism Dharma is not only seen as the way in which people should live, but also as the god Vishnu or Rama. Here we see the term dharma as, â€Å"the preserver of dharma who takes worldly form (avatara) to combat threats to dharma,†(lecture, 9/16). It was also said that, â€Å"Rama, was a heroic king who, along with his spouse exemplifies dharma,†(lecture, 9/16). This is very different then that of the Buddhists, because they believe that, â€Å"what Buddha discovered, is that which makes him the awakened one,†(lecture, 9/23) So we see that it is somewhat of the reverse from Hinduism, because it is not represented or upheld through gods, but that which brought them their god to worship. So again we see clearly that these two religions are not as closely related as people may think. After spending a good amount of time, it is easy to see that the two meanings of dharma are different within the same context outline. They both deal with the rights and wrongs of the people within the religion, and they both have, in one aspect, the same meaning; law and teachings. But when we gape deeper into the word, the way of life in Hinduism is dharma, but the Buddhist just follow certain aspects of dharma in their religion. In both religions the word dharma is very important to understand and follow, but even more important is the understanding of all the things that fall within its meanings and the other words that are connected to it. It is Esther's attempted suicide, the result of immense inner torment that lands her in psychiatric hosp ital. She is feeling overwhelmed by the social pressures of the female sex. Esther begins to demonstrate a feeling of heaviness at the choices that lie ahead of her as a woman and she is unable to be released from underneath "the bell jar" of her depression and bitterness - "because wherever I saton the deck of a ship or at a street cafe in Paris or BangkokI would be sitting under the same glass bell jar, stewing in my own sour air." (Plath, 2013: 178). Yet, even as Esther describes h er own depressive thoughts, the reader is still able to follow her struggles. She conveys her struggles so painfully accurate that she does not seem "mad" by the clinical definition, although those around her in the novel would entirely disagree. A bell jar is a bell-shaped glass cover used in biology and science to protect and display delicate objects and to cover scientific apparatus. It is such an apt title. It represents mental illness itself: a heavy, confining jar that slopes over one's very mind and handicaps the ability to fully, freely live. "It's quite amazing how I've gone around for most of my life as in the rarefied atmosphere under a bell jar." (Plath, 2013: 250). Although expressed by Sylvia Plath, this statement fully applies to the protagonist Esther Greenwood in Plath's novel The Bell Jar. Whilst most people believe the title refers to her suffocating clinical depression, it is also essential to remember that it also illustrates her feelings of imprisonment in a patriarchal world and society she can neither accept nor reject. Both Sylvia and Esther suffer from living under this sort of glass bell jar which makes it hard for them to breathe and to break free from the regulations of contemporary society (Huf, 1991). African American In The 1920s Essay ? The 1920s were a time of struggle, pride, fear, and creativity for African Americans. Following WWI, blacks fought for the conditions and rights that they were given while fighting in Europe. They fought through countless riots and murders to push for equality. They migrated across the country to escape the horrid conditions of the South. They created an entirely new cultural movement that spread like wild fire. African Americans of the 1920s created a momentous movement of political and cultural dominance that would eventually lead to their freedom. The Post World War I era was a difficult, yet prideful time for African Americans. While African Americans were fighting abroad, they were treated as equals to whites in Europe. Due to American generals refusing to command blacks, African Americans fought side by side with black and white French soldiers under French command. In addition, there were a few all black regiments, the most well known being the 369th Colored Infantry (p. 8). Upon returning home in November of 1918, African Americans faced â€Å"contradictory feelings of hope and frustration† (p. 7). They expected to be praised and rewarded for their sacrifices made during the war; however, they were met with nearly the opposite. This new mood among the African Americans became Flowers 1 known as the â€Å"New Negro. † Coined by black journalists, this term described the new attitude of post-war blacks and their will to fight against the white oppression. Unfortunately, the American public treated them the same as before the war. African American soldiers were in shock from the striking contrast of black social conditions between America and Europe. While the whites were praised for their sacrifices, the blacks were not. In one case, however, on February 7, 1919, a few thousand black soldiers marched through Manhattan, and were praised by both blacks and whites alike; however, most white Americans didn’t feel the same as those in New York. With blacks having a strong hope for equality, and whites having a strong fear of this equality, America was set up for some of the best and worst events of the 1920s. The â€Å"Red Summer†, coined by James Weldon Johnson, was a summer of hate crimes, violence, and even murder. On several occasions, both blacks and whites ended up injuring and killing one another. African Americans began to assert their new hope of equality. The first instance of this new attitude occurred in Charleston, South Carolina, when sailors killed a black civilian. A large fight broke out and several people, both blacks and whites, were killed. Riots began to appear throughout America. The worst riot broke out in Chicago and lasted five days. It all began when an African American swimmer drifted into waters between segregated beaches. A white man threw a rock at him and the black man ended up drowning. White police officers did nothing to arrest the white man. As the news spread, gang related violence quickly began to spread throughout neighborhoods. As tensions grew stronger, the violent crimes Flowers 2 became worse. Eventually, a mass riot broke out. Policemen fired upon several black men, and several thousand men became involved. In the end, 23 blacks and 15 whites were killed, and many more were injured. Unfortunately, the majority of the media downplayed these riots to try and keep everyone else under control, but The Crisis, the primary newspaper for the NAACP, published nearly every event, both good and bad. Over the summer, many other instances of violence occurred, leading to the Great Migration (p. 7-15) The lives of African Americans significantly changed during the 1920s. A large contributor to these changes was the mass migration of African Americans to the North and West known as the Great Migration. African Americans despised the Jim Crow laws, and tried everything in their power to either change or escape them. Many blacks living in the South gained much economic success after migrating to the North. Not only did the blacks want to migrate to the North for economic and civil gains, but they also wanted to escape the worsening conditions in the South caused by the Boll Weevil plague that ruined the cotton industry (p. 23-24). Upon arriving in the North, blacks began to build up their community. They built their own churches, which were significantly different from white churches. Their churches became a part of their lives, and became their community. The YMCA and the YWCA also began during this time period, promoting community as well. Western black immigrants came primarily from places like Jamaica, and were fairly new to the oppression of the whites in America. Because of this, they were not as afraid to start up new things. Flowers 3 On the political side of events, the NAACP was on the rise. By 1919, the NAACP had become the leading organization for black civil rights. Led by W. E. B. Du Bois, the NAACP constantly challenged â€Å"segregation and political equality. † (p. 57) A major success of this organization was the push for the Dyer Antilynching Bill. Even though the bill was never successfully passed, it brought lynching to the attention of the public, and eventually reduced the number of lynchings significantly (p. 60-63). While African Americans fought to make conditions better for themselves, some conditions remained poor. Some blacks began purchasing homes in â€Å"white† neighborhoods, but were faced with violence, especially from the rising Ku Klux Klan; therefore, ending the housing segregation quickly gained importance (p. 66-68). The white schools were far superior, due to the much higher wages and funding provided. In Southern states, studies showed that white teachers were paid nearly four times as much as black teachers, and the black school sizes and facilities were vastly inferior (p. 68). A third problem was the constant fight against the judicial system. On several occasions, blacks were wrongly accused of crimes, even when there was little to no evidence to prove anything at all. For example, two black men in Kentucky ended up in court for raping a white woman on â€Å"the flimsiest of evidence. † Even though no one identified the men, the all white jury spent just fifteen minutes to find them guilty, and the men were sentenced to death (p. 68). Aside from the political issues, African Americans in the North began a mass movement of cultural expansion, including literature, music, and art. This Flowers 4 movement became known as the Harlem Renaissance. The precursor to this movement was the Marcus Garvey movement. Garvey pushed for blacks to â€Å"reject the white society and build a separate life. † (p. 77) He believed that blacks should never conform to white society. He also led the somewhat unsuccessful â€Å"Back to Africa† movement, which was an attempt to have all blacks leave the country and live in Liberia instead. Following the Marcus Garvey movement was the well-known Harlem Renaissance. Even though renaissance is in the name, this movement was more of a birth than a rebirth. It all began during the Great Migration. As thousands of African Americans migrated to the North, many ended up settling in Harlem. This three square mile area became the largest concentration of black people in the world. Following the war, many writers celebrated this new life in the North, and praised the better conditions of the North in their writing. Many hoped that this mass outpouring of literature would â€Å"break down the walls of prejudice. † (p. 80) The most popular of these writers was the African American poet, Langston Hughes. Today, much of his work is considered classic literature. In addition to the mass influx of African American literature, jazz music was on the rise (p. 83-86) Jazz became a symbol of African Americans and the Harlem Renaissance. This product of music pulled concepts from â€Å"African rhythms, blues chord progressions, church spirituals, European melodies, and American marching band instrumentation. † (p. 86) Probably the most well known musician from this era was the trumpeter, Louis Armstrong. Even though jazz originated in New Orleans, it quickly spread to the East coast and eventually to Harlem.
